Sales Idea: Are There Any White Hats Left?
I recently read an article comparing today's FBIs involvement in The Meltdown versus the FBI's involvement in the S & L scandal of the late 1980's and the early 1990's. According to a recent USA Today article, the total loss in the S & L scandal was more than $150 billion versus more than $1 trillion today. Yet the number of agents assigned to the task then was more than 1,000 versus only 240 agents working on today's crisis. The difference of course has everything to do with today's increased emphasis on national security. Additional agents will be assigned to the financial crisis, because according to the FBI, there are currently 530 corporate-fraud cases pending, 38 of which relate directly to the meltdown.
Bad news sells. Reporters everywhere must be standing on their desks and thanking the journalism gods for such job security. The Germans call it Schadenfreude.
Unfortunately for the rest of us, mainstream media people make their living bottom fishing. They don't make any money printing good news. So don't expect a break.
There was a destination on the White House website that I presume is gone today. That section told you one hundred things you didn't know about the George Bush administration. To say good things about George Bush would not have furthered the agendas of mainstream media and would not have sold any newspapers. Hence those one hundred things never saw the light of day. For the same reasons, good things about our industry are never going to see the light of day. So I'm going to tell you a few good things about good people that would never sell newspapers.
