Sales Idea: It Wasn't His Fault, but He Took the Blame. Sound Familiar?
Taking the blame. I read an article recently about Kerry Collins,
quarterback for the Tennessee Titans. Not only is he still playing
professional football at age 35, he is having one of his greatest seasons
ever. Yet it wasn’t too long ago that the most embarrassing day of his
career led him to make some comments that should resonate with every
Financial Advisor in the world.
The worst game of his career. At age 24, Collins led his team to within
one game of the Super Bowl. Two years later, misbehavior almost cost him
his career. Two years after that near disaster, he finally did make it to
the Super bowl, only to throw four interceptions in the one game that is
watched worldwide. And here’s what he had to say recently looking back at
that performance.
Collins’s spin.“In a way, that Super Bowl game was liberating for me. I threw four interceptions in the biggest game you can possibly play in. I played like crap. And you know what? Eventually, I was all right. I got past it. The sun came up. In a football sense I can’t possibly screw up worse than that, and there’s a certain freedom involved in that. If I can come back from that, I can come back from anything.”
I find what Collins had to say very interesting. What I find equally interesting is what Collins didn’t say.
